L'Oreal Base Magique Primer: Review & Swatches

If you have oily skin or large pores, primer should be your bestfriend. It can do wonders to your make up in the simplest way. I have the L'Oreal Base Magique Transforming Smoothing Primer to share with you today.

This comes in a small 15ml glass jar. Some may have issue with this type of packaging for hygiene reason because you have to dip your finger in it. I personally have no problem with it at all. Make sure you clean your hands first before prepping your face and you are fine. There will be hygiene problem if you dont wash your hands first.

The product

The primer is a pale pink colour and has a velvet texture and feel to it. Upon use, I can immediately feel my skin is more smooth with less visible pores.

Here a swatch on my hand

Bare skin

With primer. As you can see, the lines on my skin is blurred.

I dont use it all over my face. Only a small amount is needed. I rub the primer between my fingers before applying on my face to warm it up. I will only apply it  on my cheeks near my nose where my pores are larger and on my T-zone where it gets oily easier. After that, I will wear foundation/BB cream as usual and my make up, stays on longer and my face doesnt get oily easily. Application of foundation also becomes easier. However since the consistency is a bit thick, I find it tricky to apply.

That was just me fooling around showing different ways to hold it in my hand..Hehe :p

The overalls:

Works wonders on oily skin
Make up stays on longer

Tricky to apply
Packaging might not appeal to everyone where you have to dip your finger in

Do you use primer or do you skip it?

Nyx Blush in Mocha: Review & Swatches

For today's post, I've decided to make a brief one.

Going straight to the post, I want to share with you today a blush from Nyx in the colour Mocha. I love the design of the blush in the pan.

P/s: stab marks of my brush is visible

For RM26, you get 4gm worth of product. Below, I snapped a photo of the ingredients to those interested to know.

Mocha is a very beautiful colour. Despite the name, it doesnt look anything like a mocha. Off the pan, my eyes see a beautiful terracotta-ish pink matte colour. Their website describe this colour as a matte mid-tone pink. The blush has no shimmer and feels buttery to the touch.

Here is a swatch on how it translate on the skin:

Left: Swatched
Right: Blended

A light hand is very important when applying this blush because it is very pigmented. I literally just tap my brush once on to the blush and apply it to my cheeks. (If you noticed the stab marks in first picture, that is the mark left from me tapping my brush. )This blush gives me the look as if I've just been out in the sun. Never swirl the brush in the pan unless you want to look like an overcooked lobster. Even though so, the blush is very easily blendable.

The overalls:

Very pigmented
Long wearing

Have you tried any of Nyx's blushes?

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain: Review & Swatches

On my previous lips post, I did a review on the L'oreal Glossy Lip Stain. Today I have another duo product of lip stain to share with you. It is the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain.

I've used liquid lip stains before but never a balm-type lip stain. As liquid lip stain tends to feel dry on the lips, I wonder how this will feel like. I was hoping it would feel like putting on a lipbalm on or even putting on a normal lipstick but with the staying power of a lip stain.

I am so happy that it reaches my expectation :)

It is very moisturizing once applied but does gives my lips that dry feeling after few but I have no problem applying lipbalm on top. Only reapply with lipbalm because the colour doesnt budge.

I love this type of packaging. It looks like a jumbo crayon. The mechanical packaging is very convenient. Simply twist up for more products by twisting the silver part at the bottom and retract the same way. No sharpening needed.

Left: Honey
Right: Romantic

The swatch:

Left: Romantic
Right: Honey

The colour that I have is Honey and Romantic.

Romantic looks very dark deep red on the packaging but it is sheer when applied. I love this colour. It doesnt give you that full on red colour that you see in the tube when applied on the lips. It deposited a nice orange toned red colour. I have no complaints on this as full on red colour intimidates me.

Wearing Romantic

Honey is a neutral plum-ish pink colour that is beautiful for everyday wear.

Wearing Honey
(Somehow in picture, it looks nude-ish pink. In real life, it looks a bit plum-y pink)

This product has a minty scent to it which is a bit bothersome to me. The scent is not appealing as I'm not a fan of mint scent. Kind of felt like I was rubbing breath mints on my lips.

This product was sold at RM33 when it was first released but Watsons always have discounts after few months.

Just for fun comparison, I have below swatches of Romantic and L'oreal Glossy Stain in Princess.

Left: Revlon's Romantic
Right: L'Oreal's Princess

The colour look similar but different in texture. So, if you prefer a glossy finish, you might want to try L'Oreal's, but it may be tricky to apply on the go. If you want something friendlier to use without a mirror, Revlon's would be your pick.

The Overalls:

Long staying power
No sharpening needed

Minty scent (to others, this might not be a problem)
Bright colour do accentuate dry lips
Not too moisturizing

I might repurchase this again in the same colour. Other colours in this line are not that appealing to me.

Have you tried these? Which is your favourite?

Nivea Pure & Natural: Facial Cleansing Wipes and Lipbalm

If a product is said that it is approved by Kate Middleton, would you go and buy it?

I did :p

The Nivea Pure & Natural range was released end of last year here and was anticipated by many due to reports that Kate Middleton was spotted buying this range in UK. I think many wanted to use the same product as her. Who doesnt want to look as beautiful as the lady who will soon become Queen.

The Pure & Natural range is supposed to make you feel closer to nature because it is claimed to contain 95% of the ingredients are from natural origins. They marketed this range as free from parabens, silicones, mineral oils and alcohol. More information can be found here.

This range consists of products for facial care, lips, body lotion and deodorant. When this range was released here, I had this should-I-or-should-I not-buy dilemma. I went in and out of Watsons and Guardian quite a few times because I contemplated buying from this range. It looks very inviting, I love products promoting natural ingredients, Kate Middleton buys it but I still have a long way to go on my current skincare products and Im refusing to buy any skincare products unless I'm almost out of them or if I didnt like them.

That being said, I settle myself with the 2 items I would actually use together with with what I already am using. The two are: facial cleansing wipes and lipbalm.

Nivea Pure & Natural Facial Cleansing Wipes

Cleansing wipes is not a staple in my facial routine but I use it whenever I feel like having an extra step in my cleansing routine. Or if I just want to freshen up. Adding this to my facial cleansing routine, I would wipe my face first with cleansing wipes before stepping into the shower and wash my face with my facial cleanser.

What I like about this facial wipes is that it has the right amount of moist-ness to it. It isnt too dry nor it is too wet. I love that it doesnt leave sticky uncomfortable residue on the skin after using so there is no need to rinse afterwards. You can rinse if want to.

The wipe feels gentle and have a nice scent. Some facial wipes left my skin feeling very dry and uncomfortable. This however left my skin feeling nice and it doesnt break me out after using.

It is RM19.90 if I can recall correctly.

This is what marketed by the company:

  • Effectively & gently cleansing the skin, while maintaining its natural balance
  • Removes make-up for a refreshed skin feeling
  • Tone & provide skin with intensive moisture
  • Combines Organic Aloe Vera & Organic Argan Oil
  • 95% of ingredients are from natural origins.

Nivea Pure & Natural , Camomile & Calendula Lipbalm

When I opened the tube, I was like 'Err..'. Because it is green. I took a sniff and and it smelt herbally so I was like "Hmmm.." I then applied in on my lips and went 'Ahh.."

Dont worry, this is a sheer colour-less lipbalm. No green colour will be painted on your lips.

I always love Nivea lipbalms and this is no exception. This is a lovely balm. It isnt too soft nor too hard. It doesnt make my lips sticky. It is easy to apply and deposited just the right amount of balm on my lips without the need to put extra pressure when applying. This lipbalm has been a handbag staple for a while now. The price is RM8.90 if I can recall.

However, is it really as natural as they marketed. I looked at the list of ingredients at the back of the packaging and see what I think are oils and alcohols.

(Ingredients at the back of the cleansing wipes packaging)

Im no expert in all these ingredients but when a product is said to be of natural origins, I dont expect to see too many ingredients with named ending with '-ol'. When a product is marketed to be 95% of natural origins, I expect to see more plant extract and less '-ol' ingredients.

The overalls:

I'd rate these 2 products 7 out of 10. If it weren't for the misleading ingredients, it would have received a 9 from me.

Suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin

Not as natural as they claimed

Will I repurchase and try other products from this range? Yes. I think I will try the Moisturizing Day Cream next when Im out of my current one.

Have you tried anything from this line? What do you think?

Garnier Skin Naturals BB Cream

Between foundation, BB cream and tinted moisturizer, my go-to pick for my face would have to be BB cream. However, finding the best BB cream in the market has been a struggle to me. There are asian BB cream and the non-asian BB cream. There are many times I went to stores and tested out few BB creams, and ended up not buying any because I'm not sure of it. This is just my personal preference.

There are also many mixed reviews making me even more confused. Too expensive, too yellow, too light, too heavy, not too many reviews, too many mixed review. So many too-s are too confusing and making life so difficult.

If you are not familiar, BB cream is most know as blemish balm. It is also known as blemish base or even beauty balm, depending on which company the BB cream is from. There is even a CC cream now but we'll to go it later in a different post.  BB cream is an all round product containing, primer, moisturizer, foundation and even sunblock.

What I like it most about BB cream is because it is an in between product of a foundation and a tinted moisturizer. It can be worn alone, over moisturizer, or even under a foundation depending on the coverage you are looking for.

With that introduction, the BB cream I have for you today is from Garnier. It is the:
Garnier Skin Naturals BB Cream, with pure lemon essence and mineral pigment for instant fairness of a BB moisturizer with SPF 26 PA+++ Anti UVB and UVA and is dermatologically tested.

(Basically I just typed everything on the tube. Hehe)

The packaging comes in a squeeze tube with a twist cap. I love this type of packaging because it gives more control and dispenses just the right amount of product without any spillage.

It comes with only one shade which I think would suit most Asian skintones. It is a pink-tone base which helps to brighten the skin.

This BB cream promises 10 skin improvements from the first minute:

From the first minute, I do see most of the skin improvement promised by them. But does it last all day?

This BB cream last as least for 4 hours (5hours max) before my face starts to look shiny on my combination skin. At the time I'm writing this post, Im wearing this BB cream for 6 hours already and my forehead is too oily to touch. My glasses is sliding on my nose and I'm starting to feel uncomfortable with my face. This happen because I wore it without any dusting of powder after I put on the BB cream. Usually I will dust on powder on top and it should be ok.

It does need some help to make this BB cream last longer: wear a separate primer underneath, blot and powder throughout the day. But for RM19.90/20ml, there is nothing to complain.

On me, the shade is perfect! It has the right amount of coverage that I want although it doesn't conceal entirely my dark spots and pimple scars. For that I need to put another layer of concealer on it or I can just dab another thin layer of this BB cream over the spots to add the coverage and blend away, which I dont mind at all. In fact I prefer if some imperfection show through so I look more natural. Would rather top up the coverage on the selected areas only than have full on heavy coverage on my entire face. I dont want my face to look photo-shopped in real life. Scary!

The overalls:

Pros: Brightens and evens out skin tone, affordable, slim packaging, has SPF

Cons: Does not suit oily skin, doesnt cover spots

I rate this BB cream 7 out of 10.

Do you use BB cream? What is your best BB cream finds?

Fragrance: Flora by Gucci EDT

This perfume was released sometime in 2009 (correct me if I'm wrong). I've had this for 2 years now and it is almost finished.

Image from Google

I have the Eau De Toilette version of the scent. It also comes in Eau De Parfume.

My bottle is missing the bow near the cap. I misplaced it somehow.

In my own words and description of the scent, upon spraying my nose immediately smells citrus. After a while it started to develop the floral scent, which is almost powdery but I dont know what kind of flower it is, and slowly I start to detect a hint of musk. It smells almost clean.

Here is what claimed by the company:

the utterly feminine and deeply sensual fragrance, inspired by gucci's iconic flora pattern.
  • a sensual and intense flowery fragrance
  • top notes of citrus mandarin accords and peony
  • heart notes of rose and osmanthus flower
  • base notes of pink pepper and sandalwood

Yup! Definitely citrus there. And flower! Is pink pepper musky? I almost nailed it though:)

I must say this is one of the strongest smelling perfume I've smelt so far. And the staying power is phenomenal. I remembered spraying this on my body and on my clothes (yes I know you're not supposed to do that or it might stain the fabric) early in the morning before going to work, went out after that, back home I took off my clothes and it still smells strongly of the perfume. Few days after that when I was about to do my laundry I still smell it on my clothes. It is THAT strong. However it is not dizzying. I like it though.

So definitely never go too much on spraying. A couple of sprays, one on the wrist and one on the neck is sufficient enough to last you the whole day.

The design looks elegant and feels expensive.

I would wear this perfume both day and night. In fact, I never categorize my perfumes to be a day perfume or a night perfume. If I like it, I'll wear it to any ocassion.

Perfumes does react differently on different person, so do get a sample of it first before purchasing and see how the scent develops on your body before purchasing. I definitely see mixed reviews before I purchased mine a couple of years back and thankfully I love it.

MAC Pink Swoon Blush: Swatches & Review

Other than lipstains, my other most favourite product is blushes. Today, I want to write on my one and only M.A.C blusher.

(Might vary in lighting according to screen monitors)

The colour that I have is Pink Swoon and it is a sheertone blush. It has a cream-like texture, and as the name denotes, it is a sheer blush but easily blend-able and build up.

It is a matte, cool toned, bubblegum pink blush. The colour pay off is lovely and very easy to apply. I'd say this is the most easiest (i know, grammar) blush to wear that I owned. Less of unwanted accident of overly pink clown-like cheeks.

Left: swatched
Right: blended

If I want to have that innocent flushed look, this is the blush I will put on because it gives the perfect amount of pink. I do believe that this colour will suit all skintones.

I would recommend this blush to anyone who wants to have that one blush that is suitable for everyday wear, or even if you just want to have only one blush.

What is your everyday wear blush?

The Body Shop Shea Body Butter & Body Scrub

Maintaining a routine is something that I struggle with. The most disciplined I've been, I think is able to maintain a routine for a month straight. That is the best achievement for me so far. Most of the time I am only able to keep up with my routine for a week and then gone! Pooff!! So, I shouldn't be complaining whenever my skin is acting up. I have my laziness to be thankful for.

That goes not only for my face routine but also my body.

So to make my laziness work with my skin, I decided to at least follow this lazy routine-: I scrub and deep moisturize my body once a week. Just to make myself feel less guilty. Because lately I dont even put on any body lotion in between those weeks. Furthermore now that I'm married, I dont want my husband to feel like he is touching a sandpaper whenever he touched me. Haha!

The Body Shop has a range of Body Scrub and Body Butters available. My pick is the Shea Body range which is for very dry skin. My justification is, since I am most of the time lazy and I rarely put lotion on my skin, I want something heavy duty and has a lasting effect. Being made for very dry skin, I believe and legitly thinks that it will have a strong moisturizing effect that will last me for a week before I repeat the routine the following week. Sometimes after the next 2 weeks.

Now, let's see the product up close.

 Shea Body Scrub
RM59.90 for 200ml

The scrub has a fairly large salt grains and has a very nice scent. It feels good when used where it doesn't feel like it is scratching my skin. However, it does melt quite quickly and thus doesnt do that well in the scrubbing department. I can let that go since it does a fantastic job at moisturizing.

Shea Body Butter for Very Dry Skin
RM55 for 200ml

Very thick consistency. Melts upon contact with skin. Small amount goes a long way.

I only do this routine at night and I will explain why.

When I take a shower I will use the scrub all over my body and wash it off. It does leave a residue on the skin which I dont mind because I believe THAT is the moisture my skin needed. Usually I dont use any shower gel after that because the scrub already has a sweet smell and I dont want to wash away the moisture. But sometimes I do use a shower gel after that if I feel like I want to wash a bit of the residue.

Heading out of the shower, I will PAT my skin dry. This is because I want to help the moisture left from the scrub being absorbed to my skin. After that, I will lather on the Body Butter. This has a very thick consistency and takes a while to be absorbed. After that I go to sleep and the next morning I wake up, my skin felt so so soooo smooth.

As I said before, I only do this routine at night. The reason is, this product leaves residue on the skin so I dont really want the residue to be transfered onto my clothes.

I love this lazy routine although at times Im too lazy to do this lazy routine.
That one cannot help lah.

April '13 Empties

My first empties for this blog :)

1. Dior Hydra Life Youth Essential Hydrating Essence in Lotion
In short, a toner. The best toner I've used so far. I also used the facial wash from this line which is also about to finish soon. My skin has been very dry lately to the point that it produces so much oil to self-balance the dryness on my skin. This toner has a very soothing feeling and calming on my skin and if not because of its price, I would have gone repurchasing this one, like, now! A super nice toner for dry skin.

2. Skin 79 Super+ Beblesh Balm.
Like my Dior toner, this also has been the best BB cream I've used. This one I want to repurchase now but I cant find yet. Previously I bought this at Watsons in Ipoh. I thought it would be easier to find it in KL, but boohoo. My mission to repurchase this has not been successful yet. Any idea where I can buy this in KL? I love this BB cream most over others because this looks the most natural on me and has a skin-like finish. It disappears on my skin. You can't even tell I'm wearing a BB cream/foundation if I put this on. So, mission on!

3. Avene Eau Thermale Light Hydrating Cream
This is a nice moisturizer. My skin is picky with the things I slap on my face. This one doesnt break me out, so it is a yeay for me. It doesnt have any scent. The only downside to it, is it doesnt have any SPF. So, I only use this whenever I go to work (being indoor from 8am till 5pm) and if I'm not going out. However, if I decide to go out, I'd have to put another layer of a separate sunscreen.

4. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence
Now this...This is my second bottle and sadly I dont see any major differences to my skin. I bought this to prep my skin for my wedding initially. Finish up first bottle, I took a while before repurchasing the second bottle because I thought maybe it might work if I continue?? I do see slight tiny improvement to my skin but I expect more, having to pay such a big amount for a small bottle. I dont know if I will be repurchasing this anytime soon. As of now, I'll try another cheaper product.

L'Oreal Shine Caresse Glossy Lip Stain

Hello there!

Long time no see.. *ehem*

These has been in our stores for a while now. I was very excited when this lip stains was released in our stores because I am a big fan of lip stains, for the obvious reason that I don't like to reapply my lippies. With great reviews of this lipstains, I have high expectations on them.

Picked myself 2 shades: Princess and Lolita.

Below are the swatches on my hand:

(Left: Princess, Right: Lolita)

At the time of purchase, there was only these 2 shades left while others were sold out. Not wanting to wait for the other colours to be restocked, I just help myself with the 2 left available shades. Just because.

The packaging looks expensive and I like how the shade is visible near the opening. No need to waste time finding the desired shade there.

Comes with a doe-foot applicator - easy spreading on the lips.

Upon application on the lips, it gives a slight cooling sensation which I find quite nice. It also has a slight nice coolly scent to it. Which is also nice. (I'm not good at describing scent)

The formulation is very different from other lipstains I used to use. It feels creamy, a bit sticky with a glossy finish. Like wearing a lipgloss but better. A normal lipgloss usually disappears after eating/drinking but this one, have a longer life on the lips. The shine does not last the whole day unfortunately but longer than a normal lipgloss would.

So basically, this is a lipgloss which turns into a lipstain.

It is recommended to wear 2 to 3 coats of these for the colour to maintain on the lips longer, but I usually just proceed with 1 coat. (Put on first coat, wait a few second for it to set on the lips and then put on second coat. Add more coats for more shine and staying power.) When the shine starts to wear of, it leaves the lips with a nice stain.

Here is how it looks on the lips:

Lolita: Very neutral, everyday wear, my lips but better colour

Princess: Terracota, bright, wow!

Overall, I'm loving this lipstains. Previously I need to put on a separate lipgloss on my lipstain but now, it is 2 products in one tube! Yippee!! Those who havent purchased this yet, now go get you some :)
